Who is

Millie May?

I think I have been sewing all my life. I made my first dress when I was 10. There are a few samples about from when I was 2 I think. My family were all sewers. My Nan was a dressmaker, she is Millicent May, Auntie Millie whose name we have adopted for this exciting venture. My Mum loved making toys and sold them at many Markets in Victoria as well as gifting them to her students and family.

Quilting making began to take over my life in 2001. I am eternally grateful to the ladies in Lorne , Victoria who were so welcoming and helpful when I began. They filled a huge need in my life just by accepting me as I was, a bit broken and battered and they have helped me along the road to mental recovery.

The act of sitting and stitching together is food for the soul. It can heal. Just the simple act of putting the needle in and pulling it out is extremely therapeutic. I would love to share this with my students and guide them to the joy that is making a quilt.

There is one highlight since 2001 that I would like to mention. In 2016 there was a special exhibition at the Houston Quilt Show of 20 'Dear Jane' Quilts to mark the 20th Anniversary of the book by Brenda Papadakas - Dear Jane. I was very blessed , humbled and honoured to be chosen to send along my Dear Jane quilt to hang with the others. Truly astonishing.
